That time I felt like Oprah - Ruby Olive

That time I felt like Oprah

A few weeks ago, I had one of those ideas that feels a bit… ridiculous at first.

You know the kind. The ones you almost talk yourself out of.

But this time…I didn’t.

I packed a bag full of Ruby Olive shopping bags and headed to a busy Brisbane shopping centre. Not to shop… but to give them away. Completely FREE.

No catch. No big plan.

Just a quiet thought:
What if I could make someone’s ordinary Tuesday feel a little lighter?

So I started noticing people.

The woman juggling too many grocery bags.
The mum with loose items rolling around the trolley.
The person mid “uh-oh” as their paper bag gave way.

And I’d walk up, smile, and offer them a bag.

Honestly? At first it felt a little awkward.
(Okay… maybe more than a little.)

But then something lovely happened.

There was surprise… then this soft shift.
A laugh. A pause. A “Wait - really?”

One woman burst out laughing.
Another looked at me like I might be playing a prank.

And then… warmth. You could actually see it.

I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

How something so small can change the tone of someone’s day.
How kindness doesn’t have to be grand to be powerful.

And how often we don’t do these things…
Not because we don’t care, but because:

  • It doesn’t cross our mind
  • It feels a bit uncomfortable
  • Or we worry it might be… weird

But maybe that’s the magic of it.

Maybe the slightly-weird, unexpected moments are the ones that stick.
The ones that remind us we’re all just humans, moving through the day together.

I didn’t set out to make a point.

I just had a really beautiful morning.
And it reminded me how good it feels to do something kind—for no reason at all.

So here’s a little nudge, from me to you:

  • Do the small thing.
  • The unexpected thing.
  • The “maybe-this-is-a-bit-weird” thing.

You never know whose day you might brighten… including your own.

Big love,
Skye x

P.S. If you're curious about the bags - you can find them right here. They're pretty damn good. Obviously ;-)
